New Web Development Contest: SharedBook Offers Open API Challenge
New York (PRWEB) August 30, 2007 -- SharedBook Inc., the Reverse Publishing Platform provider, is hosting the SharedBook Open API Challenge, a Web development contest to award the best extensions from third party applications to SharedBook in three different categories: social networking, photo sharing and desktop applications or collaborative online communities. Entries will be accepted through Sept. 30.
The SharedBook Open API Challenge http://www.sharedbook.com/apichallenge is open to extensions from any third party applications that flow their text, photographs or other content into SharedBook's Reverse Publishing Platform for on-demand output.
SharedBook's Open API enables the automatic flow of Web content into a structured book product that can be previewed and purchased immediately, or personalized further. This provides a means for Web sites to monetize archived materials and user-generated content and build brand awareness through the book's pass along value.
Developers can build extensions to connect any Web site with content that could be useful in printed book format to SharedBook. This information might include branded content, statistical information or user-generated content, for example, which can be found on gardening, online dating, real estate, sports, travel, and weight loss sites, among others.
A panel of five will evaluate the entries based on their business utility, originality and technical elegance including Dion Almaer, Co-founder of Ajaxian.com, and Benny Schlesinger, Chief Technical Officer, Jacada, Ltd. (Nasdaq: JCDA).
"Our developers inspired this contest when they were able to show us a working example of the Blog2Print blog printing widget in a few days," said Caroline Vanderlip, Chief Executive Officer, SharedBook Inc. "We look forward to seeing what other types of connections the Web development community can build to SharedBook's API quickly, and hope to review some concepts that we haven't considered."
Web developers have produced API wrappers and components connecting clients to SharedBook's platform using Java, PHP and Python languages to date. Interested participants are welcome to use the source material available at http://www.sharedbook.com/dev/resources.html as a starting point.
Projects can be installed as plug-ins to existing online applications or implemented as standalone Web applications. There is no limitation to the number of submissions that an individual or a team can enter.
These are some more specific examples of the types of third party applications that could be integrated into SharedBook's Reverse Publishing Platform by category:
1. Connect SharedBook to a Social Networking Site Examples: Appleseed, Del.icio.us, Elgg, Facebook, and Second Life.
2. Connect SharedBook to a Photo Sharing Site Examples: Facebook Photos, Flickr, Fotki, and Photobucket.
3. Connect SharedBook to a Desktop Application or Collaborative Online Community Examples: Firefox, iPhoto, OpenOffice.org, Picasa, Scribus, or Drupal, Project Gutenberg, Wikipages, Wikipedia, and Wikitravel.
The winner in each category will have the choice of an OpenMoko Neo 1973 mobile phone, a 4GB iPhone? or $500. For more information, please go to http://www.sharedbook.com/apichallenge
