Find a high quality product. There are actually thousands of products at your disposal for which the publisher or creator will pay a commission to affiliates. Many of these products are either computer programs or e-books. The products, the pricing, and the topics vary widely, so you should pick something that suits you.

You will probably need a Website to promote the product. A lot of customers search for documentation or reviews of products before they buy. Building a Website with accurate, current information about the product you are promoting will help draw customers.

Your Site will need promotion in order for people to find it. This is the hardest part of any Web-based business, as promoting Websites is a sizeable industry unto itself. You can find tons of documentation about this subject by doing a Web search for either "search engine optimization" or "Website promotion."

It is certainly possible to make money through affiliate marketing, and thousands of people do so regularly. Like any other business, it takes some time and effort to make it a success. The rewards can be great, but like anything else you might do, the benefits are strictly related to how much effort you are going to put into it.
